Vega Sicilia is Spain’s most famous wine and as Luis Gutierrez of the Wine Advocate states, ‘Vega Sicilia remains a benchmark for the world’s great red wines’. Unico Reserva Especial is their most critically acclaimed wine and earlier this summer we speculated that their most recent release, the 2014, could be regarded as one of their greatest ever: a blend of the 1994, 1995 and 2000 vintages of Unico, which have received 98, 97 and 98 points respectively. This speculation proved correct, as on Friday evening Robert Parker released the newest issue of his Wine Advocate and the Unico Reserva Especial 2014 was scored an exceptional 98 points, one point higher than their 2004 Unico, which has been fervently traded all year as one of their greatest ever Unicos.
Unico Reserva Especial is the most dialectical wine in the world, synthesising old and new: tradition and innovation. This fusion is possible through combining old vines, terroir and tradition with modern technology and international grape varieties. Their Unico Reserva Especial is born out of a wonderful Spanish tradition: historically very few estates ever bottled their own wine, instead selling in cask. As a result they would sell two wines, a vintage wine made from that year alone and another wine without a specific harvest which was called Reserva Especial. The Reserva Especial is Vega Sicilia’s most spectacular wine, a blend of vintages, thereby embracing Spanish ageing tradition and their foremost grape variety, Tempranillo (80%) combined with Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). It is made from their oldest vines, often 100 years old and blends three vintages, designed to be more than the sum of their parts and selected for their individual characteristics to achieve balance. The vintage name is taken from the year of its release when the estate feels it is ready.
Unico Reserva Especial is extremely rare and hard to source after only a couple years, as such it rises in price quickly, as can be seen from the table below. Moreover, its production is less than 1/6th of Unico, producing only just over 1,000 cases a year.
Vintage Parker Price
2014 98 £540
2013 98 £600
2012 93 £630
2011 99 £840
2010 99 £870
2009 98+ £750
2008 99 £850
Friday’s score confirms the 2014 as exceptional and hugely collectible, reinvigorating demand. Very little is left in the market, or at the estate and as such we are pleased to be able to offer a small, yet sought after 10 case parcel.
Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva Epsecial 2014 3×75 – £540 IB

The NV 2014 Release Reserva Especial is a blend of different harvests, and therefore sold without a harvest year. This 2014 Release is a blend of 1994, 1995 and 2000, three very good years for Unico. Reserva Especial is the most Burgundian, classical and reminiscent of the old-style Vega Sicilias of yesteryear, a more subtle, baroque wine, aged for a long time in wood. It has a high level of complexity and a touch of volatility, which clearly tells you that this is not a style for everyone. This is not a fruit-driven wine. It’s a tertiary wine with a developed, complex bouquet consisting of hints of leather, earth, spices and iodine, and a subtle, elegant style. This was bottled in 2010 and is one of the best modern-day Reserva Especial vintages. By the way now that we’re talking about the best Reserva Especial, if you ever have the chance to drink a bottle of the 1990 release – that is the best one I’ve ever had. 15,500 bottles of this prodigious wine were produced. Make sure you grab at least one! Drink now-2025.
